Every year as light wanes and darkness returns, Scorpio opens the gates to the Underworld and invites us to take a transformational journey. This Thursday, Sun and Moon come together to seed and disseminate Scorpio energy and themes, signaling the beginning of a new cycle, a new opportunity to evolve.
For those of us in the USA, the New Moon takes place in our 11th House, the part of the chart which addresses community. This is where we come together with like-minded others to share an interest, promote a cause or create the future through shared work.
Community is undergoing deep transformation initiated by the Internet, inflamed by political polarization and fostered by the pandemic. More and more we are creating community in what we call virtual reality, but the space through which we connect via our devices is every bit as real as our three-dimensional world. It is a hyper-dimension in which we have the potential to connect with every human being on Earth.
Teilhard de Chardin, a French philosopher who died in 1955, predicted that humanity would transform once the “no-osphere” was established. He envisioned it as a web or network through which all of humanity could connect in the mental realm. We have that web now with the enormous potential to communicate with most of humanity. Hopefully we will evolve toward that purpose, but for now we discover like-minded people through the classes we take, the speakers we follow, the groups we join around the causes we believe in. We create community in a space we can call 5-D. We are transcending the limitations of space and time.
I think we need to redefine community. I have never been a joiner. I found that all groups ended up with cliques, struggles for domination, petty squabbling and giant ego trips. Plus I resisted the need to conform. And so when I discovered that Haumea is in my 11th House, I was perplexed. How could I find this prolific goddess of abundance and joy through membership in some group?
As I was writing in my journal, my writing shifted, as it always does, and I began to include all of you in my musings. I suddenly realized that you are part of my group and that actually, I belong to a growing group of brave souls who are willing to evolve.
We are the new leaders, gently embodying the creative force of Spirit and Soul. We cultivate inner peace and resist the pull of ego toward separation. We are open hearted and vulnerable because that is our greatest strength. We learn to live in paradox and uncertainty.
We embrace the beauty and power of the feminine and practice love rather than fear. We have the courage to surrender to guidance from within.
So with the theme of community in mind, let’s look at this New Moon.
New Moon in Scorpio
Scorpio is the most intense of the water signs. It is a fixed sign. On the one hand this can manifest as an unwillingness to change, but the purpose of Fixed signs is to ground and solidify the innovation of the Cardinal signs.
Water signs resonate with the emotional body. While Air signs, like Libra, take us into mental realms, water signs add the dimension of feeling. Scorpios feel very deeply, so deeply that they can become overwhelmed and fearful, suppress their emotions and build a defensive shield against potential triggers. But deep in their hearts they long for connection. Frequently Scorpios seek sexual intimacy but eventually they come to realize that nothing in this 3-D world fulfills that longing. Scorpios embody the longing for Oneness and reunion with Source. They have a fascination with the occult or shadow side of life because that’s the territory they must traverse to reach their own inner connection to the Divine and their essential self.
The purpose of Scorpio isn’t to create fear, but to lure us, through feeling, into our deepest depths. This is the Hero’s Journey, one of facing inner demons, conquering fear, being willing to let go and reaching the heart of truth about who we really are. We are stripped of illusion, we face our fears and dark instincts, we suffer remorse and learn forgiveness. The process makes us stronger and more authentic. The Holy Grail within is the Self, our very essence that has never disconnected from the Divine and has access to wisdom, compassion and joy.
Scorpio has two rulers. The ancients saw Mars as the planet most suited to guide us into the depths. It makes sense because we need courage, determination, a desire to achieve our objective. We need momentum and a lot of energy to overcome inner obstacles.
At the New Moon, Mars is in a wide conjunction to Sun and Moon but here’s the kicker – the midpoint between the New Moon and Mars is 7+ degrees of Scorpio, exactly square Saturn at 7+ Aquarius in the 2nd House. This is an opportunity to examine our values. What do we really want? What is really valuable to us? Mars is on this mission.
Furthermore Saturn is conjunct the USA South Node, the repository of our collective karma. The future of our nation depends upon our learning from our past and healing the wounds we have inflicted.
The other ruler of course is Pluto, Lord of the Underworld and planet of transformation, a theme which is intensified by the exact opposition of the New Moon to Uranus in Taurus. This is one powerful month and it carries the potential for enormous change. Sun, Moon, Mars, Saturn and Uranus form what is called a T-Square. Saturn on our collective South Node emphasizes that we have historic issues to resolve, wrongs to right, remorse to feel and responsibility to take.
Saturn is in the 2nd House of Values. Our natal Pluto is in this House and shows us where we have gone wrong. Instead of valuing the abundance of creation, the wonder of diversity and our connection to one another, we value power over others, fame and the accumulation of wealth in the few that creates pain and suffering for the majority. We value control of resources. We see the Earth as a resource to plunder. And herein lies the reason for our slow death. As we pollute our environment, poison our air, water and soil, our world becomes sicker, our diversity shrinks in yet another extinction episode and our population is plagued with a pandemic. It’s all part of one thing – the way we treat each other and our world.
Uranus at 12+ degrees of Taurus is in our natal 5th House. On the one hand it is asking us to wake up to the world we are creating for our children and all the children to come. Uranus is at work stimulating insight and promoting creative solutions to our many problems. But first we have to wake up to the truth, see the problem for what it is and take action. We can no longer squabble over lies, and support, or tolerate, grabs for power. Our Earth is in trouble and without her, we are toast. Period.
Pallas and Ceres
To further emphasize this Gaia theme, Pallas Athena has come into conjunction with our natal Ceres. This is our Earth Mother who in her abundance provides nourishment for her children – all her children. Pallas is demanding that we fight for her health, that we make wise choices and recognize that our Earth is a spiritual being evolving with us. We are interdependent.
Mercury and Haumea
On the New Moon, Mercury – planet of perception, conception and communication – is conjunct Haumea a Trans-Neptunian Object or dwarf planet way out in the Kuiper Belt. Haumea was named for the Hawaiian goddess of prolific creation. She is responsible for the great diversity on Earth. She gives birth to new creatures, forms of life from all parts of her body and with each creation she transforms herself. Not only is she prolific, but she is the essence of the joy of creating and the celebration of diversity and abundance.
Now that we have discovered this egg-shaped planet way out in space, we can find her deep within. Can we get in touch with the joy of creation? Of creating? Can we celebrate diversity? I asked her to send me a dream last night and this is what I received:
I find myself in a marriage ceremony, marrying a man I have never met and feel nothing for. Suddenly we’re in a home with an enormous kitchen. I am making an apple pie and my new husband is working on something else. He shares with me that one of his friends has discovered the way to save humanity. I am so overwhelmed I throw my arms around him and weep with joy. When I release the embrace I notice a large fish bowl with gold fish swimming in circles, and then a cat sitting on a stool with a second cat approaching and about to pounce. Then a dog is tugging at my pants’ leg and another dog appears. This is when I woke up.
There are probably many ways to interpret this dream, but the themes are clear to me. Life proliferated and became more diverse right after I learned that humanity would be saved, when I was filled with love and joy and gratitude. With Haumea conjunct Mercury, we could all benefit from reflecting on joy. I have realized that my joy has been swallowed up by duty and responsibility – my self-imposed prison.
Mercury enters Scorpio on November 5th, the day after the New Moon. He is out of his retrograde shadow and moving into new territory. Perhaps we can tap into Haumea’s joy of creativity and awaken to our own creative power.
Conclusion
We can expect surprises this month. That’s Uranus’ MO. Look beyond the surface of what we see in the news. What is the message? Pluto is still unearthing secrets to help us awaken to the truth and Neptune is still transiting opposite our natal Neptune. Our Union is being determined now, along with our Democracy.
This is a month to take that Hero’s Journey. Remember that Sagittarius follows Scorpio. The quality of our visions and dreams for the future is determined by the clarity of our self-knowledge and integrity. Bolster your commitment and faith with like-minded souls. We’re all in this together and we can support one another during these challenging times.
You’re probably wondering how my procedure went. I wish I could report that all is well, but due to a GI tract infection and my anxiety over another false diagnosis, I went back into A-Fib after one week. So this journey isn’t over yet. I want to thank all of you who prayed and sent me supportive energy. The actual experience was magical and I felt cocooned in love. When we left the hospital a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky. I’m taking it as a positive sign.
