When I write about the return of the Divine Feminine, I don’t mean to suggest that this glorious event happens at a specific moment in time. We’re in a process of bringing ourselves back into balance, lured by the beauty and ease of the Feminine, as we simultaneously retreat from the harshness of separation, and the darkness it releases.
This New Moon chart is a mandala of potential. The heavens are telling us that we can relax and trust the Feminine to hold and support us during this transition. First of all, the New Moon is in her element, Cancer, sign of the Divine Mother. In addition the New Moon conjuncts the USA Mercury and the USA Part of Fortune. It suggests to me that great good fortune awaits if we are willing to receive it.
That is the essence of the Feminine – receptivity. Moment by moment we are showered in Divine Love but we’re too busy to notice, too caught up in the struggle of our competitive society. We’re trying to make our lives happy and successful by chasing that dream. If we would only slow down and open up, all the love we ever wanted, all the wisdom and compassion, all the answers we seek are available for free. We just need to be silent, and listen for the Mother’s voice, open to her nurturing love, and walk the path she lays before us.
I recently had the good fortune to watch Avatar, the Way of Water. If you haven’t seen it, do. I put off seeing it because of criticism that it was violent. And it is, but we have to remember that the film is an allegory and the violence on screen is a reflection of the society we have become. James Cameron is showing us the worst extreme of the dark Masculine bent on seizing and hording the world’s resources, acquiring power through force and leaving death and destruction in its wake.
James Cameron is holding up a mirror, but he’s also offering an alternative – a life of community and oneness with nature. Avatar is a world of wonder, filled with diversity and breathtaking beauty. He showed us the essence of what it is to be connected to all of nature, in harmony with each other. This is the way of water – fluid, sensual, nourishing, cleansing and connecting – a context of Oneness. Avatar shows us what sacred devotion looks like.
It’s hard to recognize ourselves as blue and naked, scampering through the trees over chasms of empty space. We cannot regress into tribal living, but we can find a new way to embody Spirit and live together in peace. To do this, we must replace our paradigm of a humanity cast out of heaven, alienated from the Divine and left to compete for resources to survive. We need to bust some faulty myths that evolved from misinterpretations of science, religion and economics.
Humanity is not fallen, sinful, isolated, living in a meaningless universe, biding time until salvation. Darwin’s theory of evolution does not apply to humans. In fact research is revealing that survival depends on cooperation, not competition. Chaos theory revealed a pattern behind all manifestation. Holographic theory explained the means by which our reality is projected. Quantum Physics pierced the subatomic field of energy from which we emerge and to which we return. Separation is an illusion. Humans and all of manifested life are in constant communication with a quantum field of divine consciousness and with each other. This information has been available for decades, but we are creatures of habit. We don’t like our beliefs challenged and cling to what we know.
We need a new mythology based on our new discoveries. Cameron offered images to inspire us. We have no idea what form our future will take, but coming generations will fashion it out of our collective dreams. It all begins with imagination.
New Moon in Cancer
Sun and Moon come together at 11:31 a.m. Pacific time on Monday July 17th at 24:56 Cancer. This New Moon is interconnected with all the transpersonal planets. It is trine Neptune calling our attention to both our spiritual oneness and our compassion for one another, but also our imagination. Sun on natal Mercury is activating our minds. Neptune in Pisces is reminding us to dream. Cancer is suggesting that we infuse our thoughts and dreams with nurturing love.
The New Moon is sextile Uranus making us receptive to insights that accelerate our awakening. It also squares Eris, the warrior goddess who fights for equality, authenticity and justice. Eris helps us bring a higher order out of chaos. Eris is conjunct Chiron which is only 12 minutes shy of our nation’s Chiron return. It won’t perfect until next April because Chiron turns retrograde in less than a week, but the healing process continues in the collective unconscious. On the day of our Chiron return, the wounded healer will be conjunct the radiant love and beauty of Venus. Just a few degrees away, the North node will be conjunct Mercury, giving us a peek at a possible new future. Keep this in mind when things look bleak.
That brings us to the defining configuration of this lunar cycle. The New Moon is opposite Pluto, forming a Grand Cardinal Cross with the nodal axis, alerting us to the potential for dramatic change. We can tip the scales toward the future we long for.
Nodal Shift
We are living in a defining moment in time, and our process is accelerating as we approach the neck of time’s hourglass. At this crucial point, the Moon’s nodes shift into new signs. Since they move backwards, the North Node will move from Taurus into Aries while the South Node moves out of Scorpio and into Libra. We are entering Air and Fire signs. The pace picks up just as we head into another grueling political battlefield.
We have a lot of experience with Aries now. On the one hand it initiates new beginnings, but instead of beginning at 0 degrees, we enter at 29:59 degrees. It occurs to me that the Nodes of the Moon focus our attention on what we already know, what we have experienced. The South Node holds all the unfinished business from our past, waiting for us to sift through its contents and clean house. The North Node is spurring us to take advantage of what we have already learned and try something new.
Right now Eris, transiting Chiron and our natal Chiron are in the North Node’s path. We’re learning through Eris to connect with our authentic selves and claim our power, to bring equity and justice into our midst. And Chiron holds the promise of healing. He also holds the unresolved pain and grief of our wounds. It will be an interesting 18 months. This is time to heal, cleanse and release – to just let go. We can reflect, we can process; then we can say goodbye and bless the many lessons of life that got us to this amazing moment. And we have help from Haumea, the first planet the South Node encounters in its new sign. I can’t begin to express how significant this is, that the planet of rebirth and regeneration is there to help us transform and release our past.
The South Node has spent the last 18+ months transiting the depths of Scorpio, assisting Pluto in digging up our fears, our phobias and our psychological wounds, all in preparation for release and rebirth. The South Node and Haumea come together on July 28th, just before the Full Moon in Aquarius.
Libra is the sign focused on our interactions with one another. I have mentioned before that the number one value of the New Earth will be the common welfare. It’s time for us to recognize the spark of Divinity in each other. It’s time to stop focusing on difference, living in judgment and fear. It’s time to shift from self-interest to collective well-being. We can choose to receive this healing and embrace our freedom.
We will be examining the qualities of Aries and Libra through 2024. In the perfect synchronicity between the heavens and life on Earth, we will be navigating the treacherous water of election politics. Fortunately the nodes will be supporting us to make the right choices. The news will be filled with rancor. The challenge is to not get caught up in the illusion of it all. Pam Gregory quoted Eckhart Tolle in a recent video. Tolle said, “The new is here. The old is just making a lot of noise dying.” Amen to that!
Cardinal Grand Cross
Yes, there is another Grand Cross and that’s because so many planets are in transition from one sign to another. Pluto is moving back and forth between Capricorn and Aquarius, highlighting the difference between our current nightmare of oppression and the freedom and cooperation of the era we are entering.
Sedna is saying goodbye to Taurus, over and over for the next few years. Haumea is doing the same between Libra and Scorpio. And now the nodes on July 18th shift energy.
By the way, in the week leading up to this New Moon, we had a big geomagnetic storm I’m writing this as the storm reaches its peak causing glorious displays of Northern Lights all over the Arctic and down through Canada to the northern states of the USA.
One of the most difficult, but least understood areas of our transformation is energetic. These cosmic energies are acting on us 24/7. In our sleep, as we work. They are drawing us into resonance with a higher frequency. We cannot resist them. We mostly are unaware of them, but we may feel fatigue or lethargy as our bodies work to integrate them. Part of our expansion of consciousness will involve a growing awareness of our energy field – its quality, frequency and impact. We are moving into more subtle realms as we discover new heavenly bodies that activate forgotten parts of our minds.
That said, it’s really important for us to pay attention to what we say, think and do. If we are grumpy, irritable, thinking hostile thoughts or taking inventory of our grievances, we are vibrating at a low frequency. If we raise our frequency, those thoughts and feelings fall away. They cannot come into resonance with a higher vibration. At a higher frequency we are more in resonance with happiness, love, joy, delight – literally a different world.
The Sun and Moon are opposite Pluto in Capricorn. Pluto, by the way, is moving closer to its natal position. It won’t make an exact conjunction again, but Pluto is pointing out the need for reform. We are now aware of loopholes in our constitution and the vulnerability of our laws. I’m sure our forefather’s never envisioned their dream disintegrating into such depravity. Next year we choose the future America will inhabit. It’s good to plan ahead.
The Sun/Moon opposition to Pluto, squaring the Nodal Axis, is letting us know that these are points of choice, and our choices carry the austere gravitas of fate. Sounds scary, but we have the information and power to make the right choices.
Final Thoughts
The Moon is the evoker of our emotions. In the sign of Cancer they can be deep. If they are painful, we know we have healing work to do. When painful emotions come up it seems natural to suppress them, to postpone dealing with them, to distract ourselves or reach for our favorite palliative. None of these are solutions.
I was impressed by the instant access and expression of emotions in Avatar. The Na’vi felt their feelings, hissed, rejoiced or cried and let them go. Yes, just like animals. Humans are a complex mélange of animal instincts, microbial needs, bodily sensations, powerful emotions, continual thoughts, and divine attributes of intuition and imagination. It isn’t easy responding to all of this input, but it is even more difficult when we have suppressed emotions working against us from the subconscious. These emotions come up not to terrorize or torment us, but to be released, to set us free. So move into them, not away. Sit with them and let them tell you a story. They bring the gift of new perception.
The symbol of Cancer is the Crab that scurries sideways in its protective shell, keeping its eyes on potential danger. The two most powerful emotions are love and fear. Cancer stimulates our need for security and safety, and thus, like our nation, we become defensive and build an arsenal of weapons. Emotions are like magnets, however, so when we are engulfed in fear, we draw to us fearful experiences that reinforce our belief that the world is a scary place. The antidote to fear is love, and it is in the heart that we find true security. We are witnessing the breakdown of a fear-based society and the emergence of one based on love. It takes courage and determination to maintain the frequency of love, but love draws more love and a life of enchantment.
As we navigate this passage from one state of being to another, fear will only paralyze us and block our awakening. When fear thoughts arise, we can pause a moment and reboot our system, close our eyes, breathe through our hearts, find something to be grateful for and let that seed of gratitude grow. As heart and brain come into resonance, we shift to a higher frequency where choices come from love.
Remember that this month is not about pushing ourselves or trying to control our lives. It’s about relaxing and receiving the bounty of the Divine Feminine.
I’ll be back for the next Full Moon and then I’m taking some time off. I need to rest and recharge after five years of non-stop work. Have a nurturing two weeks.
