“Chiron empowerment, Chiron growth, Chiron evolution centers on the choice to be loving no matter what you experience.” Tom Jacobs, Chiron, 2012 and the Aquarian Age.
Last time we learned about Chiron as an agent of healing. We explored his mythology and the concept of original wounding which is a spiritual phenomenon that initiates every one of us into our humanity. The original wound establishes a core theme that replays through our experience again and again until it is recognized, processed, resolved and released. This is the healing journey. The destination is Spiritual Adulthood.
So why the wounding? The wounding is critical to our growth. It takes us deep inside ourselves. It teaches us pain, suffering and loss to deepen our ability to feel, and ultimately to learn compassion. We experience embarrassment and self-doubt to teach us humility. We feel fear so we may learn to transmute it into love. When we are deeply wounded, we recognize it in others. We are sensitized to their feelings. When we learn empathy, we are on the brink of enlightenment because we have touched our Oneness.
This is Chiron’s function – not to wound, but to show the way to wholeness. Chiron works through the energy body to sensitize us. We are energy beings experimenting in manifestation. We are spiritual beings seeking embodiment.
We mistakenly believe that spiritual growth is about seeking enlightenment. In a way it is, but this enlightenment isn’t something outside of us. It isn’t “out there” to be discovered. It lies within. We already are enlightened beings. We have always been. This is our true identity, but we have separated from our initial identity, and can no longer see our inner light through all the wounds, negative conditioning and resulting dysfunction. The enlightenment we seek is who we are – our true, original selves.
Once we reconnect with our true identity, we can shine our light into the world. This is the purpose of our experiment in physicality. If we embody our brilliance, can we manifest Heaven on Earth? It’s possible, but to do that we have to remove the psychic debris that blocks our path and heal our pain so it doesn’t pollute our energy field. We have to take responsibility for our emotions and learn how to manage much greater amounts of energy.
Chiron is a mentor and ally in our healing journey. I mentioned last time that he is a visitor from the Kuiper Belt. His orbit encircles Saturn and Uranus. Saturn is associated with ego consciousness. We all have egos. We need our egos to help us deal with physical reality, but ego consciousness goes astray when we give it sovereignty. The point is that healing is a journey from a contracted ego consciousness into the expanded awareness of our Higher Selves. It is a journey to freedom – freedom from false beliefs, from dysfunctional emotional patterns, from mistaken identity. Uranus symbolizes this freedom. It rules the Zodiac sign of Aquarius and paves the way for the coming Age. Our purpose right now with Saturn and Pluto coming together in Capricorn is to master our egos and energy bodies and free ourselves to be the loving, spiritual beings we truly are. Chiron teaches us to lift out of our ego selves (Saturn) and identify with the radiance of our Higher Selves (Uranus).
You can meet Chiron in his cave in meditation. I recently read a fictional account that imagined Chiron’s cave made of rose quartz, the crystal that helps open the heart. You can enter his cave and seek his counsel. He welcomes the chance to assist you. Ask for insight. Ask him to lead you back to your original wound. Then stay alert and watch for signs in your unfolding life.
That brings us to Chariklo, the centaur consort of Chiron. She holds the space for healing to happen. What does that mean? The feminine energy creates and opens space. It forms context. Our thoughts, beliefs and attitudes create the context of our lives. If you think of the universe as the pure love of the Divine Mother, you are floating in a sacred sea of love. If, however, you think of the Universe as hostile, you will live in fear. If you believe the universe is indifferent and meaningless, your life will have no purpose. Context is key. Chariklo held the space for Chiron. She tended to the context of his life providing love, support, fidelity, her strength and compassion. This role isn’t valued in our patriarchal society, but think about the billions of mothers around the world who hold the space, create the womb of love for their families. Or nurses who tend the sick; hospice workers who ease the pain and fear of the dying. They are the silent space-holders whose names remain anonymous. I’m reminded of a famous line from Milton’s poem “On his Blindness.” “They also serve who only stand and wait.”
The following is a list of Chariklo’s traits from a lecture by Melanie Reinhart, astrologer, teacher and author:
Capacity for transformation
Devotion and selfless service
Holding sacred space
Healing and caring
Midwife to the living and dying
Stillness, depth
Loyalty and trust
Invisible supportiveness
Receptivity/allowing magic
Patience and reserve
Bearing witness
Enduring stability
Modesty and humility
Strength of being
You can see why I call her the Florence Nightingale of the Cosmos. Currently, Chariklo is transiting Capricorn right alongside Pluto. They first conjoined in September of 2018. They will stay together into 2020. Chariklo is the saving grace in the Capricorn stellium right now. She is holding the space for all of us to wake up, to heal our wounds, to reconnect with our hearts, to share our love and transform our world. Chariklo holds a loving space for us during Pluto’s unrelenting destruction of things past. Surrender is the key. Let go into the arms of Chariklo. Let her comfort and console your grief. Let her love envelope you.
I close with the full text of Milton’s poem in which he makes peace with the tragic loss of his eyesight. After years of bitterness, he found spiritual healing and left us this legacy.
When I consider how my light is spent,
Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide
And that one talent which is death to hide,
Lodged with me useless, though my soul more bent
To serve therewith my maker, and present
My true account, lest he returning chide,
‘Doth God exact day-labor, light denied?’
I fondly ask; But patience to prevent
That murmur, soon replies, ‘God doth not need
Either man’s work or his own gifts, who best
Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best, his state
Is kingly. Thousands at his bidding speed
And post o’er land and ocean without rest:
They also serve who only stand and wait.’
