For the last century physicists have been searching for a Unified Field Theory. Einstein left our world without answering this final question. Even Einstein had limits, or rather he didn’t have the technology to move deeper into the mystery of matter. Since then we have developed particle accelerators that force matter to velocities beyond imagination, while physicists observe and hope for head-on collisions. The force of impact splits atoms into even smaller components that behave in strange ways. Science has reached the heart of the unknown.
In this strange world particles behave as if they are conscious! They work together in pairs. They communicate with one another across vast distances in space. Furthermore, they respond to the awareness of the observer. This is perhaps the greatest discovery of science to date. At the smallest observable level of our reality we can interact with the stuff of creation! The irony is that physicists have been so preoccupied with the building blocks of physical matter, they have ignored the obvious – the context, the space within which they could observe and interact with matter.
And what is this space? It is consciousness. It is the very awareness through which we perceive. Consciousness is the unified field. It is omnipresent. Within its space lies all that is known, and so much more that we humans have yet to discover. The Final Frontier is consciousness itself. And when we meditate, we journey into a relationship with the vastness of inner space. It is a wonderland. It is the realm of Pisces.
Today, Sunday February 23rd, is the New Moon in Pisces, the final sign of the Zodiac. The zodiacal year is coming to a close. In a month, at the Spring Equinox, the Sun will move into Aries and we will see the rebirth of life, a new cycle of growth and abundance. During this Pisces month, however, it is time for review, reflection, reconnection with inner space, and a spring cleaning. Pisces offers us the opportunity to cleanse ourselves of our burdens, our struggles, our “issues” and all the baggage we have accumulated on the way.
It is no coincidence that Ash Wednesday is February 26th this year. Lent is a time of sacrifice, surrender, repentance and atonement leading up to Easter when we celebrate Rebirth. Catholics give something up as a symbolic gesture to God, a metaphorical sacrifice in honor of the ultimate sacrifice of their Savior. We don’t all believe that, but it is the observance of a sacred time that is meaningful. And for us astrologers and laypeople, Pisces is the energy that supports our letting go.
The Heavens, as usual, are offering abundant support. The New Moon at 4+ degrees of Pisces is in a closing conjunction with retrograde Mercury. For those of us in the USA, it occurs in the third house of our nation’s birth chart. In other words, Mercury is in his favorite house, the house of Gemini which he rules. Mercury wants to wing our minds into new territory. He is taking us on a backward journey for the next three weeks, showing us the territory we have covered, pointing out problem areas, offering suggestions on alternative ways to look at situations, or people. We can learn so much about what is obstructing our growth, constricting the expansion of our consciousness.
Furthermore, Mars is closing in on a conjunction with the Moon’s South Node. We cannot overestimate the potential of this coming week. This event is exact on Tuesday – Shrove Tuesday. Mars is serving up a feast of karma. The South node is the energy ganglion that holds all our unfinished business. It is the repository of unresolved issues, unhealed wounds, rifts in intimate relationships, and most of all, the false conclusions we drew about their significance. It’s time to dig into the Node’s gift bag and take another look at some old stuff, to attempt to see it with new eyes.
I dreamt the other night that I was at camp in the far North. The bathroom in our facility was filthy and I asked the director to clean it up. When I returned later, it was spotless and there were a dozen sparkling toilets distributed haphazardly around the room. I woke up laughing. Now that was a South Node dream! Clean up the mess within. I even got to see how great I would feel when it was done.
For those of us in the U.S. this Mars/Node conjunction happens in the first house – the house of Identity. We are being asked to reflect on our identity, both personally and collectively. This is the year that we decide to save, or to lose, our Democracy – the most liberated idea of social contract in history. Are we courageous enough to defend our constitution, to preserve the union that we fought so hard to create? Are we a nation of leaders, innovators, spiritual warriors, or are we sheep? Do we have ideals? If so, are we willing to stand up for them?
Reality is screaming at us to wake up. The way we make ourselves more available for awakening is by shedding the past – all the resentments, all the negative thoughts and feelings about ourselves and others. We have to stop seeing ourselves as fallen, flawed, weak and helpless victims. We are powerful. And we connect with this power when we relinquish the past, when we turn away from the ego that is enslaving our minds with a Story about who we are, when we think beyond self-interest and take an interest in redeeming humanity and preventing its demise.
The New Moon is sextile Uranus. This aspect is activating. In other words, the New Moon is getting a lot of juice from Uranus. Uranus represents an impulse to move beyond. Uranus jolts us out of our slumber, smacks some Reality in our faces. It can be gentle if we listen for the subtle clues, but the longer we ignore the message, the louder it will broadcast. It is associated with explosions, revolutions, accidents.
In the coming weeks Jupiter will move in on Pluto. We’ll explore this event in upcoming posts, but the function of Jupiter is to make things bigger. If we are hanging onto a problem, or a bitterness, Jupiter will expand it. Another reason to shed the past this month. This conjunction will be in the USA second house, the house of values. Sometimes we only see the value of something when we are about to lose it. We certainly are on the brink.
Just to be clear, this entire year is about transformation and empowerment. We as a population are facing serious questions, looming crises, do-or-die situations. It’s our time to face some facts. We cannot stick our heads in the ground, no matter how painful the outside world appears. Our work is to find our inner strength, to clear out useless baggage, to step into Spiritual Adulthood, accept our power along with its responsibility, and join the team of Evolutionaries to serve humanity. We are the ones who can lead our nation forward. There are millions of us, all facing the same crisis. The vast majority of us are good people, with solid values, warm hearts. I believe in us. We can make the difference.
