“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential.” Muhammad Ali
This is an incredibly powerful week, indeed month. On Sunday Pluto squared Eris for the second time. On Wednesday Mercury stations retrograde. Friday is the Moon’s first conjunction with retrograde Venus after initiating her new cycle in Gemini. And the grand finale is Saturday when we have a Solar Eclipse – a Ring of Fire – right on the exact moment of the Summer Solstice. Archetypal energies abound, turning up the heat in our alchemical pressure cooker.
We’ll look at the eclipse later in the week. For now let’s examine the synchronous activity of Eris, Pluto, Mercury and Venus, the two outermost and the two innermost planets in our Solar System. Throughout 2020 and into 2021, Eris and Pluto are moving in and out of exact square, 90 degrees apart. This relationship is an activating one. Most astrologers think of the square as a difficult relationship. Indeed it usually triggers unfinished business that needs cleaning up, but we can look at that as an opportunity, rather than a misfortune.
Pluto and Eris are working together to reveal the illness within ourselves and our society. Pluto releases unconscious material into consciousness – what has been suppressed, repressed and buried. Eris reveals the shadow side of our egos. Together they point out the rancor amongst us, the inequities, the simmering hatred and rage, the resentments and injustices, the toxic and festering wounds that keep us imprisoned in a paradigm that is sucking the very life out of us and our planet.
We are all getting a chance to see what needs to be addressed – police brutality, injustice, racism, inequity to name a few – to heal our society and save our Democracy. The dictum of metaphysics applies: As Above, So Below; As Without, so Within. What we see in our streets is reflecting back to us the separation and division within ourselves, as well as our deep longing for peace and solidarity.
The Heavens provide us abundant Gemini energy. Mercury is coming to a standstill and on June 17th will begin its apparent backward motion. Planets are most powerful when they are standing still. This whole week is about a Pause. The Sun stands still at its apex at Zero degrees of Cancer at the Summer Solstice. Mercury stands still before its retrograde. Venus stood still at the beginning of the month; Neptune in a week. All these archetypes are beaming information and energy, revealing truth, showing us the way, supporting our awakening.
Mercury is at 14+ degrees of Cancer, the Moon’s sign, feminine faculties of feeling, caring, nurturing, gestating new life. It is within one degree of the USA Sun. Mercury is asking us to reflect on our national identity. Who are we now? Who do we want to become? Are we a nation that cares, gives, supports one another and protects the welfare of all, or one that fears, hates, competes, defeats one another in our separate, disconnected, soulless lives?
I recently heard a lecture by an astrologer named Divine Harmony. I learned from her that Mercury turns retrograde conjunct the star Sirius – brightest star in the sky. She says that Sirius is the Spiritual Sun of our Sun. Open your minds for Mercury’s messages from the starry realm.
We’re seeing it all now. There is real potential for change. We can reclaim the best of our social contract and improve, if not perfect, our Union. It all begins with how we treat one another. Mercury will be returning through the 7th house of relationship, partnerships, marriage. Associated with Libra and ruled by Venus, the intention is to find balance, peace and harmony within ourselves and our interactions with one another.
The last retrograde Mercury was in Pisces on February 17th and its new cycle began on the 25th when it conjoined the Sun. From now until June 30th we are winding down that Pisces cycle. Pisces is about our spiritual connection to one another, to all life and beyond into unseen dimensions. It’s about Oneness, which is about our relationships with one another. It is also about illusion, disillusion and delusion. We may not be seeing clearly.
The Sun is in Gemini within 2 degrees of the Moon’s North Node. This Node will feature prominently in the Solar Eclipse. It represents our evolving future. What is possible? Take heart from Muhammed Ali’s words above. What impossible dream tugs at your heart?
I am moved and inspired by the solidarity around the world with Black Lives Matter. I am amazed by Minneapolis dissolving their police department. This is a significant symbolic act, returning power to the people and encouraging communities to protect and care for their citizens. Think about it – a world without police! We could make that happen, but it would only work if everyone took full responsibility. Instead of punishing, we could assist. Instead of blaming, we could understand and support one another. Instead of hiring others to be responsible for us, we could step up and work together for the welfare of all. That’s a possibility in our future world.
While our mental Mercury is in emotional Cancer, our feeling Venus is hooking up with the Moon in Gemini – Mercury’s domain. The message is to bring our heads and hearts into balance. We live most, if not all, of our lives in our heads. This leads us astray. We depend upon thinking our way through life. We make up stories about reality and believe them. We delude ourselves. But the heart has a more reliable wisdom – not the grasping heart that wants its own way, but the open heart that desires understanding, compassion and connection with others.
Now is the time to set aside a part of your day to just BE. To reconnect with Self, to feel your feelings, to increase intimacy with nature. Leave the busy doing for half an hour and watch the clouds, or feel the sunshine and the breeze on your skin, listen to bird song or the hum of bees. Giving yourself the gift of Being opens up more inner space, establishes a connection with inner wisdom, lets you get to experience deeper dimensions of yourself. This is where inner strength lies. This is where wisdom can inform your life. Attune to the Moon/Venus energy on June 19th. The Moon will bring the first news about the seeds of intention you planted at her conjunction with the Sun. If you didn’t consciously plant any seeds, do so now, before Saturday’s Eclipse.
The Moon will be dark at this time, preparing for her reunion with the Sun. But first she consults with Venus. What is your heart’s desire? What do you want for yourself, your friends and family, your country, your planet? Let intentions form that will find fertile soil on the Summer Solstice. We will talk about this rare event on Friday. In the meantime, look at the discord in your life. Are you making separation choices or are you seeking a more perfect union?

Wow. I love the idea of planting my seeds of intention. I will work on that!
