“You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” Christopher Columbus
I intended to write about the Full Moon in Leo which occurred on February 8-9, depending on your time zone. I was lucky to see that Moon flooding the backside of the Tetons as well as fields piled high with snow. It was brilliant. I was unlucky, however, to succumb to the flu that has incapacitated me for the last ten days.
I was going to write about courage. Leo is the sign of the lion, and the lion-hearted. Coming only three days after the Senate acquitted our president of the crimes everyone knew he committed, three days after the greatest display of cowardice by the Senate majority, and the exemplary courage of one lone Republican, it seemed fitting. Mitt Romney was the hero of the day, demonstrating to our nation what it means to have faith, to be true to one’s oath, to search one’s soul and stand up for one’s values. He stood alone, tall and authentic, raw and vulnerable, and spoke his truth amongst his peers. I hope you all got a chance to see his speech. If not, take a few moments and visit YouTube. Let yourself be inspired and fortified by his lion-heart.
Liberated by a kangaroo court, our president has proceeded to display his vindictiveness. He has attacked everyone of integrity. He has fired those who had the courage to testify and tell the truth. And recently he has declared himself the highest authority of our justice system. In an act of childish defiance, he has pardoned his peers – criminals all – men who have cheated, lied, stolen, defrauded innocent victims in a gross misuse of their wealth and positions of power. He has defied the rule of law, created a constitutional crisis by destroying the division of power among three equal branches of government. His crony McConnell handed him the Senate. His toady, William Barr, has turned over the Justice Department.
To paraphrase Rachel Maddow – “What now?” She, and so many others of us, have been warning for three years that our Democracy is in grave danger, that our president is becoming an autocrat. There is no doubt now that he has accomplished his goal. As he interferes in the trial of Roger Stone and lies about it, as he proposes a budget that cuts Social Security, Medicare and programs for the handicapped, which he vowed never to do, as he appropriates billions from our Defense Department to build his stupid wall that can’t even stand up to a few gusts of wind, as he systematically assaults our environment at a time of greatest climate crisis, as he golfs on American taxpayer dollars charging his Secret Service agents for room and board at his high-priced resorts, the proceeds of which flow directly into his coffers, he displays the behavior of his favorite dictators. In case you aren’t shocked yet, I read the other day that the total cost of his golfing excursions alone is the equivalent of 300 years of presidential salary!!!
On Sunday, February 16th, Mercury turned retrograde in Pisces. Three times a year, Mercury offers us an opportunity to pause and reflect, to review the previous three months, make adjustments to our thinking, identify missteps and make course corrections. It is a time to rethink, or to go deeper with our thoughts, to question everything and gain clarity about our priorities. Mercury retrograde in Pisces is a time to take a look at our faith, our values, our spirituality.
What is spirituality? Ultimately it is our identity and our relationship to the All. This includes ourselves, our Souls, each other, all living creatures on Earth, Gaia herself and beyond to the Sacred and Divine Mystery of our Oneness. Spirituality is not about stories and dogma and religious beliefs. Religion is the institutionalization of spirituality. Certainly it is good for us to come together to honor what is sacred and to give thanks, to sing songs of praise and express gratitude for the gift of life. But Religion has degenerated, just like government. Both have become corrupted by power and greed, both have cornered the market on ideology and both are sources of discord and conflict.
Human consciousness has evolved beyond the need for an authority to intercede for us with the Divine. We are all perfectly capable of connecting with what is good and true and beautiful. We all are connected deep within to the same consciousness, and if we clear away the debris that blocks the light, we have direct access to what we call God. We all can sit in meditation, still our minds, open our hearts and let our souls inform them. This is the meaning of Pisces, the last sign of the Zodiac. The Sun entered Pisces a few hours ago and will be here for the next 30 days. Make the most of this opportunity to reconnect with your true self, take time to reflect on your relationship to life, to others. Are you contributing your best? Are you living your values? Are you honoring the sacred?
We can all take a lesson from Mitt Romney. What is your legacy? How will you feel about yourself on your deathbed and how will your children and friends remember you? Are you a good citizen? Do you have the courage of your convictions? If not, find it, because our nation needs the best we have to offer. We have one last chance to save our Democracy. Forget about party affiliations. Search your soul and vote your truth.
Next Sunday is the New Moon in Pisces and I will share the potentials and pitfalls of the month to come. In the meantime, to get a better feel for Pisces energy, check out my post on Neptune from last year.
Neptune is the co-ruler of Pisces, enticing us to surrender to something bigger, more vast and profound. The other ruler is Jupiter. At 5 a.m. today, I peeked out my office window and spotted the waning crescent Moon right next to Jupiter, brightest light in the early morning sky. Jupiter brings faith, hope, optimism. As this past cycle fades away and we move into the waters of Pisces, we can look to Jupiter to remind us to keep the faith and trust our connection to the Divine.
