With the exception of a brief retrograde back into Aquarius, Mercury has been in Pisces for over nine weeks giving us plenty of time to think about our need to connect with one another, to communicate, to socialize. The quarantine, however, forced our Mercury function inward asking us to reflect upon ourselves and the state of our psyches.
There has been much death, grief, fear, shock and loss, disillusionment and despair. The weaknesses in our for-profit health care system are glaring. The fragility of our economy is clear. The lack of leadership is appalling. Our president prefers to lead from behind, pretending he’s doing a great job and soon we will forget all about it and get back to “normal.” As if the madness of capitalism, run amok, is normal.
All responsibility has fallen upon the states which are underfunded and unprepared. Fortunately leaders have emerged like Jay Inslee in Washington state, Newsom in California and Cuomo in New York. These governors are demonstrating what strong leadership and decisive action entail. It has been a relief to watch Cuomo address his state with compassion and appeal to other states for help. It has been heart-warming to see other governors respond and ship needed ventilators and medical supplies to his overtaxed hospitals. It has been inspiring to see doctors and nurses rush to New York to help save lives. Cuomo has focused on a united front while in our Capitol we squabble over partisanship. The cracks in our political system are opening wide.
Today Mercury has entered Aries. A fresh start for the mind. We will feel an energy shift and some of the emotional heaviness will rise from a sense of victimhood into positive outrage. Aries is ruled by Mars and stimulates will and action. Most of us still can’t take action out in the marketplace, but we can certainly focus our minds on the multiple problems that emerged and begin to think up new solutions. We can exercise our will and speak up. Never has this been more important. We will make our will known in November, but we are still 6-1/2 months away, and look at what has happened in just the last three months. We can’t sit around and wait for an election.
Once we make it through this pandemic, we will be faced with an economic crisis and if we don’t make the right decisions – now – we will face an even greater climate crisis. Make your will known to your senators and representatives. Write an Op-Ed piece and send it to the editor of your local newspaper. Sign petitions from Sierra Club and a host of other environmental organizations and share their posts on your Facebook page.
We vote every single day with our thoughts and words. Public opinion matters – not about celebrity gossip, but about pressing issues. Where do we want our tax dollars to go? Do we want to see another corporate bailout that lines CEO pockets or one that addresses the needs of the majority of our nation’s families? We are the ones that make this country work and this is what frightens the Masters. Their empire crumbles if we don’t support it.
Do we want a bandaid for our healthcare system or real reform? Healthcare is a basic human need, not another corporate opportunity. What if we removed money and insurance companies from our healthcare system? What if doctors got to care once again for their patients and feel good about the work they do rather than be oppressed by hospital systems that want assembly line service? What if we didn’t have to worry about bankruptcy over medical bills?
What if we all made a living wage? What if we started to cooperate with one another for the welfare of all rather than compete for power and money and prestige? And what about our political system – a seesaw between opposing parties who want power and have lost sight of the fact that they serve the people who elected them? What if we rebalanced the equation and put power back where it was intended in a thriving Democracy?
Leadership from the top, just like trickle-down economics, has failed us. Our experiment in liberty and justice for all has been sidetracked by runaway capitalism. This is what 2020 is all about – all of us realizing what doesn’t work and opening to new possibilities and potentials for a better future. But it is hard to change a system, especially when those in power don’t want change because they benefit the most from the status quo. So Pluto and Saturn and Jupiter have come together to turn up the heat and force us to take a good hard look at our reality. Sadly, hardship is the most effective impetus for change. This year is painful for all of us, but most painful for those who try to hold on to the past. Once we begin to envision a better future, and get excited about it, we can align our will with our vision and step into our power to effect change.
While Pluto is about death, this archetype also brings about rebirth and empowerment. Pluto is about power and when power is misused, it triggers a Pluto correction. Power is being misused in our political, economic and financial institutions and so these institutions are crumbling, making way for something much better. We cannot control what is happening, but we can exercise our will in service of our future.
